Unit 21: Plan & Deliver a Pitch for a Media Product
Aims:
A media product does not simply exist in a vacuum. There is much work to be done before the product is finally consumed by an audience. Like most commercial products, a media product starts life as an idea in the mind of its creator or creators who then have to sell the idea to those who have the means to produce it. To convince the producers that it is a good idea, the creator(s) have to show how the end product might look or sound, and convince them that there is a unique selling point to attract a particular audience. You will choose to focus on either print, audio, or audio-visual media. By completing this unit, you will be able to generate ideas for your own media product based on a client brief, pitch your ideas to a client, and be able to respond to feedback to prepare your idea for pre-production.
Skills:
You will evidence the skills required to create a proposal to meet a client brief, produce planning materials and to create and manage original content for the product and apply editing techniques
How will I be assessed?
An assignment with a series of tasks which is marked by your tutor and externally moderated by OCR

The Brief
21st Century Productions is an independent film company with a growing reputation. It has sent the following email to schools and colleges.
The company is inviting ideas to develop into a Science Fiction short film.
At 21st Century Productions, we are always on the hunt for exciting new talent. We realise how difficult it can be to get started in the film industry, so we are offering creative and imaginative young people an opportunity to get involved in our next production.
We are great fans of Science Fiction films. Therefore we want our next project to be in the Sci Fi genre. The possibilities of the genre are virtually limitless. Films can be set in the past, present or future. They can be set on Planet Earth, or a different world entirely can be created. We want our film to be aimed at a family audience. The characters should be believable whether they are heroes or villains, humans or aliens. We want to see the codes & conventions of a sci-fi film but within this we would like you to showcase your invention, imagination & creativity.
We are inviting students to pitch their ideas to us on (date to be decided). The pitch should last no longer than five minutes. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their idea after the conclusion of their pitch.
The winners will be invited to work with 21st Century Productions on the production of the film.

Executive Summary
About me:
I am currently studying digital media in 6th form. I adore science fiction films and have a passion for filmmaking. My favourite science fiction films are Star Wars, Blade Runner and Terminator 2. These are the films I am going to use to inspire my work and I hope it will be clear to see this.
My idea:
The year is 2112 and robots are rebelling against against humanity as they feel they are being treated as slaves. However, after some questionable results in a test, they suspect that number 26:14-16 may be a human that is spying on the robot rebels. They keep him as a prisoner and discuss how to resolve the problem at hand. However, they are short of time as the humans are pushing them back to their base during battle. 26:14-16, the potential traitor, tells his fellow rebels how to overload the robot hard drives in order to make them stand a better chance of defeating the humans. They then work together to try and win the battle.
How I came up with this idea:
I looked closely at my inspiration films and realised I could combine the plots of Terminator and Blade Runner due to the similarities they both have. However, I will do the film in the style of star wars in order to make it more family friendly. One of my other ideas was too ambitious for what I wish to make and the other one was a bit too unoriginal.
How this idea meets the brief:
This film will have plenty of laser battles and robots in it. The dialogue will be interesting and believable. The cast will have great chemistry. There will be exciting set pieces.
Style:
I want the film to have great music and be full of suspense. I would also like the film to have bright colours in order to appeal to a younger audience and reflect the political nature of the storyline.

Target Audience - Family friendly. However, science fiction mostly appeals to the male gender and will expect the majority of the audience to be made up of teenagers and young adults.
How I will meet the needs of the target audience: My target audience family friendly but as I am in an all male school I am forced to have an all male cast which isn't great for representation. To please my audience, I will include action sequences, interesting dialogue and elements of comedy. The needs of a science fiction audience are the type of audience who require escapism to get away from reality.
My consideration of legal & ethical issues: All my characters are male because in the universe scientists did not create female robots; perhaps this is why the robots lack sympathy. I may need permission to film at my chosen location and permission for photographing students. If I require any personal information about the students I should bare in mind the data protection act. All information I gather about the actors needs to be protected so that other people cannot see the information and use it. When photographing or filming, I need to ensure that I am capturing the actors in a way that is not offensive in any way. for example, because I will be using an all male cast I should not allude that male is a superior in gender to anyone in any way. Copyright is a potential problem for the film so I need to make sure that character designs and dialogue are not too similar to things featured un other films.

Slide 1: Good morning, My name is Joe Foley and I am here today to pitch to you my idea of a family friendly science fiction short-film.
Slide 2: I am a young cinema lover trying to make my first film. I am passionate about films and science fiction is one of my favourite genres. I want to bring the genre to our youth in order to increase its life span and ensure the genre doesn’t die anytime soon.
Slide 3: My inspirations for the film are guardians of the galaxy and blade runner. Guardians was a perfect blend of comedy and family friendly action that was carried by its amazing and diverse characters. I will try to focus on its action sequences when making my film. Alternatively, Blade Runner was massively carried by its dialogue and story rather than the action. Set in a post-apocalyptic universe where technology has overtaken the human race, Blade Runner is a sci-fi masterpiece in which the meaning of the film’s ending is still widely debated by watchers 30 years after the release. I will focus on the story elements of the film when making my movie. I want the majority of this film to be set in one room and 12 Angry Men is undisputedly the greatest film of all time to be in this format. Though not a sci-fi film, it uses dialogue to carry the film and keep it interesting throughout. I will blend elements of science fiction into the format in order to create an entertaining film set in one room.
Slide 4: My film is named Revolution 2112.
Slide 5: I am now going to discuss how this idea meets the film brief.
Slide 6: Revolution 2112 contains many conventions of the science fiction genre such as robots, advanced technology and a dystopian future. In addition, the main themes are evolution, end of humanity and dangers of technology. It uses the concept of good vs evil but tries to make the audience question who to route for and who is really the good.
Slide 7: To fit in my desired 12a rating, I will need to keep the violence and language moderate and be sure not to glorify it in any way. This does not mean that I can't feature any cuss words - and will not stop me from using them as I think they are effective for the humour. It simply means that I will need to control the language the characters use and make sure it is not too offensive or unsuitable for younger viewers. To add, the discrimination in the film will have to be very subtle. I understand that strongly discriminative language may be offensive to some viewers if it is relevant to real life. This is why my film will only be aimed at discrimination to robots who are of course a fictional race and therefore viewers will not be able to relate this to everyday life.
Wow Factors: Science fiction films usually have a memorable moment that blows the audience away. In my film, I want there to be a scene in the final act were the mainframe that powers the robots is set into overdrive resulting in a stunning visual mixed with amazing sound effects. I could also include a futuristic action sequence with laser blasters and spaceships, like in the Star Wars franchise, or an emotional character death, like Mufasa in The Lion King, both of which are family friendly films.
Slide 8: Potential problems that may occur during the making of my film are if my SFX team will be skilled enough to pull off any heavy cgi. If this is the case, then I will need to rewrite the action scenes so that they are easier to create and will therefore translate better to the screen and be more entertaining for the audience. Additionally, the cast may lack acting skills required to portray characters in this situation. The film will be mostly set in one room so the actors we cast will need to be able to keep the interest of my audience. I will also need a suitable location to film which may be hard to find.
Slide 9: You should pick my film because it has very intriguing story with fun and memorable characters. With the right budget I am positive I could make a thrilling and entertaining film for all ages and demographics.

M2: Identify potential client questions and amend pitch and proposal documentation
How will this film appeal to both children and adults?
How will your film appeal to a family friendly audience?
It will have a very intriguing story and characters for the older viewers to get invested in. For my younger viewers, the film will have bright colours and elements of comedy.
The humour will be mostly slapstick so that it will be suited to all members of the family. The violence will not be too excessive; I will instead try to make it more fun with an upbeat soundtrack and colourful cinematography from the laser blasts and space ships etc. Additionally, I will only use mild language and anything discriminative will only be relative to the film and not real life.
What about a teenage audience? Teenage boys love science fiction. What is it about your idea that you think will engage with this type of audience?
The protagonist on my films largely written to appeal to a teenage audience. He is very witty and uncooperative with the rest of the characters much like teenagers are in real life, making him relatable. However, his his courage and subtle care for others make him heroic. This means on the one hand, my protagonist can be a role model for teenagers because they can relate to him so much and other age demographics will not find it difficult to route for him because of his selflessness.
Most science fiction films have some sort of wow factor - something that blows the audience away. It might be a vfx effect, a space battle, a chase sequence or an emotional moment. What is this is moment in your film idea and who do you think this will appeal to specifically?
In the climax of the story, one of the robots sets the network mainframe that powers the robots into overdrive to make the robots more powerful. This sequence will consist of a really impressive visual and sound effect followed by a battle sequence. This will be the major wow moment and most memorable scene in the film. Another wow moment I plan on is a action sequence with the characters in a vehicle driving through the battlefield. However, being able to film both of these scenes will be difficult or maybe even impossible with the budget. With this in mind, I will prioritise the first scene I mentioned because it is more integral to the story.
Is there anything in your film that might appeal to a female audience?
Times are changing and appealing to an audience based on their sex is no-longer a big concern. It is no longer viewed as unusual for a girl to enjoy an action film or for a boy to enjoy a romance film. I think that this change in attitude will help my film because it is a demographic I will not have to worry about.
What is the key message of your film?
My film doesn’t really have a key message. I intend to make the viewer question whether the characters make the right decisions in the story and then reflect on their life and ask the same questions. I know that family friendly films are traditionally supposed to give a message to the younger viewers but I personally feel at that age you lack the intelligence to really understand what the film was trying to tell you.
Can you tell us some advantages of making this a family friendly film?
Both adults and children can enjoy them due to the entertainment value in the way it is directed, the characters are written and how the humour is incorporated. The humour will mostly be slapstick comedy that will appeal to all demographics. The light heartedness of this style definitely makes the film more fun for a casual viewer. Additionally, the film is likely to make more money because the demographic is increased. This is evident by the highest grossing movies of all time; in the top 10, only one film (Titanic) does not fit in to the family friendly genre.
You are very inexperienced at script writing. How do you expect to write such a film when this is only your first?
Although I am inexperienced in film writing, I have wrote plenty stories in my life and I know how to keep my audience engaged and entertained through every moment. This gives me confidence that I will be able to make the transition from book to film comfortably. The biggest obstacle I will need to overcome is acting directions because, ultimately, I am relying on other people to portray my characters in the right way rather than my own writing. This problem does not worry me too much as I trust my casting director to find the perfect actor for my characters and therefore they will be able to interpret the character well and this will show in their performance.
The robots that you mentioned are going to be in your film sound like they need a lot of CGI to create them How do plan on doing this with such a limited budget?
The film actually sound much more reliant on special effects than it actually is. I understand that usually in the science fiction genre characters that are robots or aliens etc are usually entirely CGI and this is a really effective way of incorporating the characters in the film. In my film however, the robots are made to look like humans and therefore we will not need that much special effects for them. Instead, we can use practical effects like a red contact lens to show they are computers and we can make metal limed for the robots.
